Helpful Hints from the Tactical Team

Turn off your water

Going on vacation? Remember to turn off your main water source! A small trickle can turn into a huge mess if left alone for too long. If you are unsure how to do this, just call our office. We will be more than happy to help save you trouble and money by properly instructing you, free of charge.

Change Your Air Filters Regularly

Changing your air filters regularly can increase the efficiency of your heating equipment! Clean air filters can reduce the stress put on your equipment and prolong the life of heat exchangers. As an added bonus, regularly changing your filters can prevent dreaded warranty issues.

Use Space Heaters Correctly

Are you tired of high fuel bills? Consider using space heaters or alternative fuel sources wisely, but exercise caution. Space heaters pose a fire hazard if placed too close to combustible materials and can lead to frozen pipes. How? Many of our winter service calls are due to space heaters being used in proximity to thermostats. When your thermostat senses warmth from a space heater nearby, it may trick the system into thinking the whole house is up to temperature causing your central heating system not to activate, leaving other areas of your home vulnerable to freezing temperatures despite the warmth in the immediate vicinity.

Remove Hoses From Outside Faucets

Leaving a hose attached to an outside faucet in the colder months and not allowing the water to properly drain can lead to a big mess come springtime. When the trapped water freezes and expands it can burst your outside faucets piping. When it warms up again outside, and the water unfreezes, it can all come spilling out where you definitely don’t want it to.

Don’t Fall for Drain-Opening Products’ Bold Claims

Using acid to clear a clogged drain can corrode your pipes and create a hazardous situation that requires our intervention to resolve. Additionally, mixing non-compatible chemicals can lead to explosions. If you opt to utilize these products, do so cautiously and primarily as a preventative maintenance measure. Not to clear a completely blocked drain.

Sand Mound & Drain Field Maintenance

Regular use of septic scrub helps maintain the proper functioning of your system. Additionally, it's recommended to have the tank pumped every three years. Investing in these preventive measures now can save you from significant expenses down the line.

Hard Water Costs You More

In comparison to soft water or water with normal harness levels, hard water causes build-up in your washing machine, dishwasher, ice maker, faucets, you name it. This buildup drastically reduces the life of your appliances which is why we recommend getting your water tested and having the proper conditioning equipment for your needs.

Slow Leaks Add Up Fast

Adding just 3 drops of food coloring in your toilet tank (not bowl) overnight may be able to point you toward savings. If you do this, check the bowl of the toilet in the morning. If the water is still clear, your toilet is properly functioning. If it shows signs of the food dye, this means you have a malfunction in your toilet’s system that may need to be addressed.

Inspect Your Sump Pump Regularly

Debris drawn into the pump can result in pump failure, potentially leading to a flooded basement. Make sure to regularly check the pump and its surroundings to ensure the area is clear.
